Preparing for your PRP Injection Visit

PRP Therapy is a minimally-invasive procedure that is typically administered in our clinic. The procedure itself takes 30 min to 1 hour. Following pre and post-procedure recommendations will optimize healing and ensure a good patient experience.

Pre-Procedure Preparation

  • If taking, you may be recommended to stop anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) medications 7 days prior to procedure (e.g. ibuprofen, naproxen, celebrex, etc.).
  • Please ensure proper hydration at least 72 hours prior to procedure until the date of your injection.  Dehydration may reduce the likelihood of an adequate amount of blood drawn, which may negatively impact the outcome of the injection.

Post-Procedure Recommendations

  • Depending on the site of injection, some patients prefer to have someone drive them home after the injection.
  • Please refrain from icing and use of NSAIDs post injection. PRP is aimed at inducing an inflammatory response to get the body to heal itself.
  • Patients can resume activities as tolerated.  Reducing activity for the 72 hours following the injection may be recommended by  your surgeon.
  • Common side effects include pain, bruising at the injection site, rash, redness, and swelling. In rare instances, infection, tissue damage and nerve injuries are reported.

Depending upon where your PRP was injected, your recovery will be tailored to provide for optimal healing. Depending on your injury, we typically want you to follow up in the clinic to see the Orthopedic Surgeon or Physician Assistant approximately 2 weeks after the injection and then again at 6 weeks and 3 months post-injection.
