Pain Management Overview

Pain affects everyone at some point in their life and can cause significant stress to one’s physical, mental, and emotional health. Pain Medicine Specialists use a broad-based approach to treat all pain disorders, ranging from pain as a symptom of disease to pain as the primary disease. A pain management physician can best identify the root cause of your pain and then formulate a comprehensive treatment plan.

About Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, sometimes known as “PM&R” or physiatry, is a medical specialty that aims to enhance and restore functional ability, decrease pain, and improve quality of life.  The goal is to formulate an accurate medical diagnosis when possible and discuss all potential treatment options to help patients address their medical goals and improve their functional abilities and quality of life.

Because pain is complex and covers a wide spectrum of conditions, pain medicine doctors specialize in both the physical and mental aspects of pain management. It is critical for your physician to take a holistic approach and practice shared decision-making.

Chronic Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common orthopedic conditions. Chronic back pain can negatively impact all aspects of your life if left untreated. Understanding the symptoms and causes of back pain can help you get an appropriate treatment plan. Our team takes a holistic, shared-decision making approach to addressing chronic back pain.

Non-Opioid Pain Management

A common misconception regarding pain management is that pain is best treated with opioid prescriptions. There are many pain non-opioid pain medications that are efficacious and have a higher safety profile compared to opioids. Additionally, certain exercise activities and guided physical therapy are best for relieving certain types of pain.

Interventional Spine Procedures

Sano Orthopedics offers an interventional pain management program that helps patients living with chronic and acute pain find relief.  Our non-opeartive treatment of pain includes a myriad of techniques aimed at reducing your pain levels and providing you relief.

Our team has extensive training and expertise in performing interventional spine procedures such as epidurals, facet joint injections, medial branch nerve blocks, radiofrequency neurotomy, sacroiliac joint injections, and peripheral joint injections.

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc occurs when the soft center of a vertebral disc pushes through the disc wall and into the spinal canal. The herniated disc pinches nearby nerve roots, which can result in pain, numbness or weakness.  While surgery is one treatment option for some people, surgery is not usually necessary to relieve the problem.

Non-operative spine care

Spine surgery comes with many risks, and we know it’s usually not the first or best method for relieving pain. Our goal is to partner with you to develop the most effective treatment plan. We not only want to improve your pain but also your function and quality of life.

Using a comprehensive and holistic approach, the pain management team at Sano will create a custom treatment plan for you.
