Herniated Disc

What is it and what are my treatment options?

What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc, which is often referred to as a slipped or bulged disc, is a common condition, especially in males aged 35-55 years. A herniated disc occurs when the soft center of a vertebral disc pushes through the disc wall and into the spinal canal. The herniated disc pinches nearby nerve roots, which can result in a host of unpleasant, possibly life-altering symptoms.

If you have a herniated disc, the common symptoms can include:

  • Spine pain that radiates into the extremities
  • Extremity tingling, numbness, or weakness

Symptoms may range from very mild to severe, but treating a herniated disc in its early stages can prevent symptoms from getting worse. At Sano Orthopedics, our fellowship-trained Spine Surgeon has helped many patients with herniated discs live active and healthy lives using the latest conservative treatments and surgical procedures.

Herniated Disc Treatments

There are many treatment options at Sano Orthopedics that relieve the symptoms of a herniated disc. A herniated disc is usually effectively treated using non-surgical treatment options and our team creates treatment plans based on your lifestyle and goals. These treatment plans may consist of any combination of the following:

  • Activity modification
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Injections

Spine surgery is only recommended if a herniated disc does not respond to non-surgical treatment options. Our Spine Surgeon, Dr. Stephanie de Vere, is fellowship-trained with expertise in performing microdiscectomy and laminectomy spine surgeries. She is trained in minimal access as well as open techniques. The approach is dependent on each patient.
