Physician’s View: Research & Education

What does optimal healthcare look like? Are we as a profession and industry really focused on achieving optimal health for our community? Is there a better way?

These three questions have lingered in my head for years. When starting medical school, you begin with youthful idealism, an idealism that slowly withers throughout school and residency. It is unfortunate, but common, in medicine that the “real world” doesn’t quite match up to what you expected health care to be.

Starting a new practice

After four years of medical school, seven years of residency and fellowships and a year and a half as a practicing surgeon, I had a moment of pause in my life that drove me to seek a change. With the above questions in mind and multiple conversations with my wife and family, we decided to embark on the monumental journey of starting a new private practice.

In October of 2016, we opened our doors with both anxiety and excitement. The road to today has certainly had some bumps along the way. But through it all, we have remained focused on our core values.

Values

Quality: We will deliver superior outcomes.

Service: We will focus on the patient experience from beginning to end.

Research and Education: We will continue to investigate, publish and share knowledge to help improve the health of our community.

Integrity: We will operate with integrity in all phases of our practice.

Financial Viability: We believe private practice physicians can be the best drivers of innovation in healthcare; to achieve this we must create value in maintaining physicians in a private practice model.

Community Engagement: We will volunteer, educate and partner throughout our community to help improve the health of the village.

Outcomes

We are focused on outcomes and continue to track them. We currently maintain a patient satisfaction rate of 97%. We have published more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals in the last 3 years and continue to be leaders in our field. We have maintained integrity, financial viability and continue to expand our community engagement.

Future

Although we have accomplished a lot in a short time, we have been far from perfect. Our practice continues to evolve to answer the first question: “What does optimal healthcare look like?” Thus, you will notice some changes in our practice over the next few weeks when you visit.

From a patient perspective, you will notice decreased wait times, improved access and streamlined communication. You will have a “navigator” guiding you through your visit and experience with AOSM, someone who will optimize communication. We want our patients to have the best possible experience in health care, and we want to continue to innovate new ways to optimize that experience!

We also want to hear from you! What do you like about our practice? Where can we improve? Please share your feedback in person, call or drop us a note.

We have a great team here at AOSM and as we grow we continue to identify those that share the same values. We are not perfect, but we are constantly seeking a better way. Thank you for being a patient with us, and for also taking this journey with us over the past 2 years!

Sincerely,

Dr. Matt Daggett
