Athletic Training Residency

2022: Reflection by our Athletic Training Resident

Athletic Training Residency

In 2021, we started our Athletic Training Residency program. Our mission with the AT residency program is to provide the athletic trainer a comprehensive educational program aiming to advance the skills necessary for an athletic trainer to be successful in the orthopedic physician practice setting.

A Resident’s Reflection

Sarah Bowser is our first AT resident.  She attended Slippery Rock University for undergrad and West Virginia University for graduate school.  She reflects on her first 6 months at Sano and learning about orthopedics.

“As an athletic training resident, you get one year of hyper-focused practice in orthopedics both in sports and the general population. I have been gaining experience in the clinic focusing on evaluation, documentation, and radiology readings. As well as gaining experience in the operating room learning sterile techniques, surgical procedures, sutures, and closing techniques. I have been developing new skills as an athletic trainer that you would not get in the traditional setting, such as casting, sutures, injections, and the OTC certification!”
Her favorite part of the Athletic Training Residency has been her experience in the operating room.

About Athletic Training in Orthopedics

Athletic trainers are educated to provide comprehensive patient care in five domains of clinical practice: prevention; clinical evaluation and diagnosis; immediate and emergency care; treatment and rehabilitation; and organization and professional health and well-being. This skill set makes athletic trainers a great fit for orthopedic practices.
